Guide to the Best Boiler Warranties and Guarantees

Which manufacturer offers the best boiler warranty for their boilers? When will the manufacturer attend in the event of a boiler breakdown under the terms of their warranty? Is a Worcester Bosch Guarantee better than an Ideal Boilers Warranty? What is the difference between a boiler guarantee and boiler warranty? We have the answers!

We get into the terms and conditions of 9 boiler manufacturers to find out who offers the best manufacturer boiler cover: Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Ideal, Potterton, Vaillant, Main, Viessmann, Glow Worm and Ferroli. To make it easy, we have made up handy tables for each manufacturer that show the length of warranty for each boiler in their range and the requirements for meeting their extended warranty (see below).

What is the difference between a Guarantee and a Warranty?

The boiler guarantee is a contract between you, the homeowner, and the boiler manufacturer to attend your property and repair or replace the boiler within a reasonable period of time without quibble. The guarantee is legally binding on the manufacturer and improves your consumer rights. Worcester Bosch were the first to upgrade their warranty to a guarantee, followed by Vaillant and Glow Worm.

All other boiler manufacturers offer a warranty on their products. A boiler warranty is like an insurance policy. The boiler manufacturer promises to come and have a look at the problem, but it is not a no-quibble policy to fix or replace it. Warranties entitle manufacturers to charge for call outs and the terms of a warranty can be changed without notice.

Length of Boiler Cover from the Manufacturer

At the very least, a boiler will come with a 2 year warranty from the manufacturer, however most boiler manufacturers with extend their boiler cover up to 5 years and Worcester Bosch, Baxi, Vaillant, Ideal and Viessmann now offer 10 year warranties or 10 year guarantees on their premium boiler models. 

Conditions of Cover

All of the manufacturers have strict conditions that must be met in order to secure their extended warranty or guarantee. The tables below set out the warranty or guarantee details for the boilers from our 9 manufacturers. We set out the conditions that must be adhered to in order to 1) secure their standard cover period and 2) secure the extended cover period should one be provided. We have also looked at what happens in the event of a breakdwon, i.e. what is covered, any charges that the manufacturer may apply and exclusions of service (such as no safe access). At the end of the eight tables we have summarised common exclusions of cover.

7 Top Tips on Boiler Warranties
  1. ​Ensure the Benchmark form is completed and on site (located in the back of the user manual)
  2. Ensure there is safe access to the boiler - e.g. fixed loft ladder and light if situated in the loft
  3. Register the boiler within 30 days of installation
  4. For extended warranties you may have to use an Approved Installer.
  5. Have the boiler serviced annually and keep the documentation on site
  6. Be sure the fault is a genuine manufacturing issue by ringing the manufacturer's help line - you will be charged for a call out if not.
  7. To avoid additional charges, make sure you are home when the engineer attends and the Benchmark and servicing documentation is on site and completed

Ideal Boilers Warranty

Standard conditions for minimum warranty apply. A stricter servicing policy than Baxi, i.e. that the boiler must be serviced every 12 months. Again a potential call out fee for non boiler related faults but also if documentation is not complete and available on site. Ideal provide a boiler warranty.

Worcester Bosch Guarantee

Same charging policy for non-boiler related faults and standard conditions not being met, including documentation not on site. Worcester offer a Guarantee over a Warranty. Worcester will extend the terms of the Guarantee to other qualifying products if fitted at the same time as the new boiler, such as the WAVE, Comfort controls and Greenstar Filter.

  5. Self maintenance tasks such as, re-pressurising and resetting the product, bleeding excess system pressure and thawing frozen condensate pipes/wastes
  6. Reimbursement of third party costs
  7. Excludes annual servicing and consumable items including ignition, ionisation, electrodes and gaskets
  8. Boilers that have been moved without consent of the manufacturer
  9. Mobile leisure accommodation - boats and caravans
  10. Any accidental damage
  11. Faults related to the wider heating system
  12. Consequential damage to system or property
  13. Defect, damage or breakdown caused byinadequate servicing of the boiler or by deliberate action, accident, misuse or third party interference including modification or an attempted repair which does not fully comply with industry standards
  14. Defect, damage or breakdown caused by the design, installation and maintenance of the central heating system
  15. Any defect resulting from the incorrect installation of the boiler, the flue system or the facility for condensate disposal

By using a Worcester Accredited Installer (as we are) you will gain at least two additional years of cover from Worcester.

The table below sets out the guarantee periods given by Worcester for their range of boilers and extended guarantee periods when combined with other Worcester products, including programmers, magnetic filters and cylinders.

The blue boxes show the guarantee period for non-accredited installers. The yellow boxes show the extended guarantee you will receive with one of our boiler installations.
